Today we’re going to be talking all about how to clean up your email list. I’m asked this question all the time. So I’m glad that we can finally talk about it. Cleaning up your email list is especially important once you start growing your list and you’re paying for your list. At times it can get really expensive if you’re not careful, so regular hygiene updates are essential.
Most email platforms have you pay for the number of subscribers you have, so it’s important to keep the number of subscribers under control so you can save money. I also don’t think that you should ever pay to have someone on your list if they don’t want to be there.
That’s why I strongly recommend that you take the time to evaluate your subscribers and identify those that are warm vs. cold. This will allow you to identify those people who are cold and not opening or engaging with your emails. From there you can decide what you want to do with them.
The Importance of Cleaning Up Your Email List
If you’re not sending out emails on a regular basis, that is going to be a problem in the long run. This is because you’re not giving people a chance to open and interact with your emails. So, how would you know who to remove or keep on your list if you’re not giving them a chance to engage with the content that you send?
A good tip to help you weed out those that don’t want to be on your is to send an email to your list and invite people to unsubscribe if they’re no longer interested in your emails and the content that you provide them. This is a great way to only have people on your list who want to be there, and as an added bonus, you’ll be able to save money in the process.
I have people ask me all the time what email platform they should use to send out emails. I know that it can be a stressful decision and can seem overwhelming at times. Over the years, I’ve used almost every email provider out there, and one really does stand above the rest.

Tips on How To Clean Up Your List
I’m going to share a few tips on how to best clean up your email list. If you’re sending out at least one email per week, the process I’m about to share with you is going to work very well. However, if you’re only sending emails on occasion, this might be as beneficial.
Before you think about removing people from your list, start sending out a regular email for at least a couple of months so you have enough data to make an educated decision.
You need to give people an opportunity to open your emails. This is why it’s so important to send out regular emails. When you look at your cold list from the past 90 days, those are the people you want to focus on and consider removing from your list.
These are the people I would send an email to and let them know that they will be removed from your list unless they let you know that they still want to continue getting your emails. In the long run, this is going to be better for you and like I before it’ll save you some money too. You don’t want people on your list who don’t want to be there anyway.
When you send out the unsubscribe emails, your subject line can be as simple as asking the person if they’re interested in your niche or brand. The goal here is to remove those that don’t want to be on your list or to get more people engaged and interact with your emails.
You’ll ask your cold list to open your email if they want to continue getting emails from you and let them know that they will be deleted from your list if they don’t open or reply. Don’t include any links in this email.
You really need to make sure that your list is concentrated and engaged for the best results. You want your open rate to remain at 20% or above overall, and if you have a large cold list, this could ruin your stats which you really want to avoid at all costs. This is why it’s so important to clean up your list on a regular basis and remove anyone who is no longer interested.
Do This One Thing Before Deleting Subscribers
I don’t care about the size of my email list. That may be surprising to some, but it’s the truth. My top priority is the quality of my list and making sure that I am reaching out to people who are engaged and want to hear from me on a regular basis.
I would much rather have a smaller list who highly engaged people than a large list with thousands of people who never interact with my content. It’s just not worth my time to reach out to people who don’t care about what I’m providing them. Your time is precious, so it’s important that you make it count!
The one thing you must do before deleting contacts from your email list is to export your cold list. Never delete any contacts before going through this process! Why? This allows you to reimport them at any time if you want to try and reengage them at a later date, or you can always upload that list to Facebook and create a lookalike audience for your ads. This will also save you money from having to store those contacts within your email platform. So, it’s a win-win situation.
I would recommend going through this complete process every six months to make sure your list is up to date. I would also complete this process after you’ve done a big giveaway. Since a lot of those people may not be as engaged as you’d like, just give them a few weeks to have the chance to engage before you go ahead and remove them.
This is the exact process that I follow and recommend you to use when you’re looking to clean up your list. You should be doing this on a regular basis. It’s really simple if you do it right. Like I said before, you need to make sure that you’re reaching out to your list on a regular basis and segment your cold list, so you know who isn’t interacting with your emails.
Don’t let this process overwhelm you! It’s much easier than you might think and is going to be very beneficial for your business.
